Dark skies kit list

The list below is intended for dark sky events that involve a hike to scenic locations.

Essentials

Walking boots - Comfortable, waterproof, support the ankle and good grip. Trail shoes are acceptable, but you might get wet feet!

Socks - Woollen or merino walking socks are a good option.

Walking trousers - Quick drying walking trousers (not jeans!). Thermal ones can be beneficial too.

Waterproof over trousers - Preferably with full length zips so they can easily be taken off and on. These can also act as an additional warm layer.

Base layer - T-shirt or shirt next to your skin, should be breathable product like merino. Avoid cotton as this holds moisture.

Thermal layers - tops and bottoms, it can get very cold while stargazing.

Mid Layer - Comfortable fleece.

Extra warm layer - Fleece or insulating jacket.

Waterproof jacket - With built in hood.

Gloves - Two pairs in case one gets wet.

Warm hat - A buff can be useful too.

Rucksack - A comfortable ~30 litre day sack.

Head Torch - With new batteries and spares. A red light function can be really good for preserving night vision too.

Dry bags / bin bags - We suggest you pack all your kit within one large or several small dry bags / bin bags to keep your kit dry. We recommend.

Food - Enough for your event.

Drink - Take a hot flask if possible. For longer hikes, we also recommend a filter water bottle so you can pick up water as you go.

Other items - Your phone, camera etc

Optional

Walking poles - Great to take the strain off your knees.

Binoculars - 10x50 are ideal for stargazing.
