Just 45 minutes from Aberdeen Harbour, Bennachie is one of Aberdeenshire’s most iconic hills and a much-loved local hiking destination. This half-day hike offers cruise guests an authentic taste of Scotland’s natural beauty, folklore, and history all within easy reach of the port.
Led by an experienced Hillgoers Mountain Leader, guests can explore scenic forest trails, open moorland, and the summit of Mither Tap or a gentler heritage trail through the Bennachie Colony ruins. Along the way, the guide will share stories of the Picts, the Iron Age hill fort, local wildlife, and the cultural heritage of the region.
Why it’s ideal for cruise passengers:
Short travel time from port.
Clear summit goal (Mither Tap) or low level nature trails.
Panoramic views across northeast Scotland.
Take some time to explore the Bennachie Visitor Centre.
Royal Deeside Walking Tour
Explore the scenic landscapes of Royal Deeside, one of Scotland’s most beautiful regions. An hour and twenty minutes from the port takes you to Balmoral Castle. The Balmoral Cairns are a collection of historical monuments erected by the Royal Family to commemorate significant events, surrounded by beautiful Caledonian pine forest; they are a real hidden treasure in Aberdeenshire.
Highlights:
The walk distance and ascent can be adjusted on the day to give more time to visit the Castle or whisky distillery.

Perhaps you’ll simply enjoy exploring the various different habitats, from the wetlands surrounding Loch Kinord to the beautiful native Caledonian and birch woodlands.

Join us on a walk from the picturesque seaside village of Stonehaven to the dramatic Dunnottar Castle. The castle sits on a 160-foot sea stack, surrounded by the North Sea. Once an impregnable fortress of the Earls Marischal, it was long held by one of Scotland’s most powerful families.
We begin at the north end of the shore, walking through the fishing-village streets and up to the prominent war memorial on Black Hill, constructed in 1928. From there we follow the coastal path to the castle. After the walk, you’ll have time to explore Stonehaven’s shops, cafés and pubs.
