Why Choose Hillgoers?

    • Experienced - we choose guides with both mountain experience but also life experience. We have a wide selection of guides from all walks of life from ex-military to members of Mountain Rescue to qualified doctors.

    • Professional - all of our guides are fully qualified holding the relevant qualification for the activity and season - Summer Mountain Leader, Winter Mountain Leader, Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and more.

    • First aid qualified - all guides hold at least an Outdoor First Aid Certificate, some are also doctors or members of the Mountain Rescue.

    • Appropriately sized groups - usually 6-7, less for more technical trips.

    • Emergency contact - when running an event we always have someone at our ‘Base Camp’ in case of an emergency.

    • Group emergency kit - your guide will carry at least a group shelter and group first aid.

  • We’re all fully qualified, insured and members of the Mountain Training Association meaning our skills are kept up to date. We are also holders of Adventure Activities Licence, inspected by the UK Health and Safety Executive.

  • We can provide minibus transport dependent on availability.

  • We can provide certain kit if required - tents, sleeping bag, helmet, crampons and ice axes etc.

  • Whether it be a private or open event we always try to tailor the day to the group's requirements and abilities.

  • We pride ourselves on a common sense approach to cancellation.

What if Plan A isn’t achievable?

As much as we’d always love to deliver our primary objective, it’s not always achievable in winter. The snow and weather conditions will ultimately decide where we go and what we do but rest assured that your experienced guide will provide a plan that works best on the day.

What skills are typically covered on a winter skills course?

Personal movement skills on snow (digging stances, kicking and cutting steps).

  • Use of ice axe whilst walking and how to prevent and stop slips and trips.

  • Use of crampons.

  • Winter navigation techniques.

  • Avalanche awareness, safe route planning.

  • Emergency procedures.

All skills are coached in context with the conditions on the day. We try to cover as much as possible. The amount of depth that we’ll go into will be dependent on the length of your Winter Skills course.

Do I need to be an experienced winter hill walker to join an ‘Explore’ event?

No, but we ask for you to have at least attended a winter skills course beforehand. These are aimed as a refresher to existing skills.
