Having spent a number of years laid up with a bad back, it feels only right that I support BackStrongTrust with their aim to help people with back issues and hidden pain. Since my lower disc replacement, I can now enjoy the hiking lifestyle that I love so much, thanks to the superb medical care I received a few years ago now.
I'm also very much committed to supporting Aberdeen Mountain Rescue Team, my closest mountain rescue team. They provide a first class volunteer rescue service for walkers, climbers and others who enjoy outdoor activities in the Cairngorms, the hills of lower Donside and Deeside. I have so much respect and gratitude for their commitment to our safety on the mountains.
The Lairig Ghru is Scotland's most iconic mountain pass. The walk takes you through the heart of the Cairngorms, reaching an altitude of 835m, with a distance of 31km (19 miles). This is a serious walk and good level of fitness will be required. The walk will begin at the Linn o' Dee car park and end at Coylumbridge where transport will take us back to Linn o' Dee.
You will be given advice on what to bring and your guide will keep you safe along the way and point out the interesting features as you walk.
Participants are encouraged to raise money above the entry fee for either the chosen charities above or for their own cause. The entry fee will be used to cover some of the costs of the event (transport and possibly additional Mountain Leaders). Hillgoers will take no money from this event. All surplus money will be split 50/50 for the above charities.
