Location

Scotland’s largest National Park, the Cairngorms National Park is home to one-quarter of Scotland's native forest; one-third of the UK land above 600 meters; more breeding waders than the whole of Wales and a quarter of the rare and endangered species in the UK! The Cairngorms is part of an international family of National Parks and is the largest in the UK, at 4,528 sq km (1,748 sq miles). It is also one of the best places for stargazing, with vast areas of low light pollution and amazing vantage points. The Tomintoul and Glenlivet areas of the National Park have been awarded the prestigious status of International Dark Sky Park, making it the most northerly Dark Sky Park in the world and among the darkest skies in the UK.

Hillgoers are based in Royal Deeside and their highly qualified team have expert knowledge of the Cairngorms. Supervising over 300 DofE participants each year, Hillgoers team will help you create the most memorable expedition in our local area.

Our open expeditions begin in the picturesque town of Braemar, just an hour and 30 minute’s drive from Aberdeen. With good public transport links the village is easy to reach. Braemar has a small supermarket for basic produce, a mountain equipment shop, restaurants, and cafés.

Following your initial day’s training and route planning, the rest of your expedition will take place in the stunning wilderness of the National Park, rich with flora, fauna and history, giving you the opportunity to see many iconic Scottish species.

Both Ballater and Braemar have a range of accommodation, including hostels, should you require accommodation before or after your time with Hillgoers.

Fun Open DofE expeditions for individuals and small groups

If you don’t have access to an organised DofE expedition or you can’t attend your school’s expedition dates, our open expeditions are for you.

Hillgoers run a range of open DofE expeditions in the stunning Cairngorms National Park. Taking part in one of our open expeditions is a great way to meet new people and share the sense of achievement that comes from completing this part of the award.

Our aim is to ensure that participants successfully meet the 20 conditions of the expedition section, whilst making friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

How we supervise and look after our participants

All expeditions are risk assessed and, whenever possible, remotely supervised. Groups might be under close supervision at a stream crossing, or could be out of sight for the whole day if competent and getting on well. As we operate in remote areas, our supervisors have satellite communication devices to basecamp when phone signal is not possible.

Hillgoers operate a 24/7 basecamp with minibus support for any extractions for medical or weather reasons, safety of our participants being our top priority.
